If you find yourself in New York’s cozy Greenwich Village neighborhood, don’t pass by the wonderful Magnolia Bakery, where you can go crazy over the selection of all kinds of cupcakes and other desserts, especially if you, like me, have a sweet tooth. Every time I’m in New York, I go there for breakfast one day to indulge in some delicious sweets. As a rule, I arrive right at the opening, because every hour there are more and more people, and the later you wake up, the more likely you are to wait in line. Together with the cupcakes I buy coffee there, and to enjoy my sweet breakfast without delay, I settle down in the coziest square, which is right next to the bakery at the intersection of Bleecker Street and 11th Street.

There are several Magnolias currently operating in New York City, but it was in Greenwich Village that the very first bakery opened in the summer of 1996. At that time, two enthusiasts Allisa Tori and Jennifer Apple, hiring only three employees – a baker, a dishwasher and a barista, opened a small bakery, which initially offered only 4 types of bread, some cinnamon rolls and a few other pastries. The bread was soon phased out because it was time-consuming to produce and more space was needed. But then the cupcakes were born, which made Magnolia world-famous. It was originally conceived as a simple home bakery, intended only for residents of the neighborhood and open from morning until 6 pm. But not even a year later, the cupcake craze literally began! At first, local residents who were ready to buy delicious cupcakes not only in the morning, but also in the late evening succumbed to the frenzy, because of which the hours of operation were increased, and Magnolia began to work until midnight. But soon not only New Yorkers, but also tourists began to come for sweets from Magnolia. In order to buy the coveted cupcakes, it was necessary to stand then a decent queue. Now the matter is much easier, because the network has grown and bakeries have opened in several more districts of the city. During its existence Magnolia Bakery has changed owners and staff, but their wonderful cupcakes have always remained unchanged! There are a lot of them, different colors and tastes, and almost always there are some limited collections, timed to some events. And the desserts are prepared right in front of you – the kitchen is open and you can hang around for a long time watching pastry chefs decorate cakes or the same cupcakes.

Magnolia also had “black days”. For example, in 2007 it was closed by the Department of Health because of non-compliance with accepted standards. But on the same day when this happened the mayor’s office was flooded with calls demanding that the bakery be reopened immediately. The mayor was forced to make concessions and Magnolia was allowed to open in a couple of days, of course, on the condition that all the deficiencies would be corrected.

It is also worth noting that Magnolia Bakery on Bleecker Street has become a real star! It has been featured in many movies and TV shows, but perhaps its greatest fame came when it appeared in season 3 of Sex and the City – Carrie and Miranda were eating their cupcakes so appetizingly on a bench next to the bakery that Magnolia instantly became a must-visit for many fans of the show. The bench, by the way, has now been removed, but the photo proof proudly paints on the entrance.

As I wrote above, there are several Magnolia Bakery currently operating in New York City. In addition, there are bakeries in Chicago and Los Angeles. The current owners have grandiose plans to expand the chain – they are going to open 120 more establishments around the world in the next 5 years! But, even if Magnolia opens near your home, I highly recommend that if you find yourself in New York, stop by this nice cozy bakery on Bleecker Street to indulge in a delicious cupcake, I’m sure you will never forget it and the atmosphere created there!

The post Cafe Ferrara in Little Italy is New York’s Oldest Pastry Shop appeared first on Bakery Abus.

New York is famous for many things, but quality coffee is not always one of its greatest assets. The image of a New Yorker with a paper cup in his hands symbolizes the rhythm of the city rather than the true enjoyment of the drink. Personally, I don’t like this option. I don’t consider myself a coffee connoisseur, but I know for sure that the standard Starbucks flavor is not my thing.

One day, walking through Chinatown, which is gradually turning into the disappearing Little Italy, I came across a cozy cafe called Ferrara. Had I been alone, I probably would have just taken a picture of the pretty sign and walked on by. But that day I was out walking with friends who couldn’t imagine a morning without coffee, so we decided to stop by. It turned out to be a good decision! Inside we were greeted by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and pastries, and the drink was served not in paper cups, but in real porcelain cups.

History of Cafe Ferrara

Cafe Ferrara has been operating since 1892, which is a real antiquity by the standards of New York. The institution was founded by two cousins from Naples – Enrico Scoppa (Enrico Scoppa) and Antonio Ferrara (Antonio Ferrara). Their idea was to create a place where Italians – passionate fans of coffee and opera – could enjoy a drink before or after the performance, and at the same time play their favorite card game Scopa (“Broom”).

Antonio Ferrara, as an opera impresario, quickly realized that the café could be a profitable business. At the time, there were many Italian immigrants living in the neighborhood, and there were hardly any places for them to sit and relax. Singers frequented the café, and even Enrico Caruso himself – the legendary tenor who performed at the Metropolitan Opera from 1903 to 1921 – was a regular. He came here not only for coffee, but also for the traditional pastries – pignoli (almond cookies with nuts) and sfogliatelle (puff pastries with cottage cheese filling), which were prepared daily in the café’s own bakery.

Ferrara: five generations of family business

Over time, the cafe passed to Peter Lepore, husband of Enrico Scoppa’s daughter. Even during the Great Depression, the business managed to survive, thanks to the fact that baked goods were prepared in small batches several times a day to avoid wastage.

During World War II, Cafe Ferrara began sending torrone, a traditional Italian nougat made from honey, sugar, egg whites and almonds, to the front. This dessert has been known in Italy since the XV century, and each region makes it in its own way. The founders of the cafe are from Naples, so the Ferrara recipe is based on Neapolitan traditions.

What to try at Ferrara

I didn’t try Torrone, but I did try cannoli – a crispy tube with delicate cream, ice cream and, of course, coffee. The taste is simply amazing!

Today, Cafe Ferrara remains one of the few New York establishments still owned by the same family – the fifth generation to run the business. The cafe is located on the corner of Mulberry and Grand streets and is open every day from 8am to late night. If you want to feel the atmosphere of the real Little Italy and taste the best Italian desserts of New York, you should definitely come to Ferrara!

From Lucie is not just a bakery, but a true artistic project that has won the hearts of many dessert lovers in New York City. It all started at the very beginning of the pandemic when Lucie France de Ferrière started baking cookies and banana bread for her fiancé’s coffee shop, Sunday to Sunday. But she soon realized that making cakes decorated with fresh flowers was her true calling.

Using Instagram and pop-ups, Lucy began selling her unique cakes, which became instantly popular. Her creative approach, the contrast with perfectly smooth and symmetrical cakes from traditional bakeries and original “shebby-chic” style decorations made her products real works of art.

From Lucie cakes: art and aesthetics in every bite

Each From Lucie cake is not just a dessert, but a real work of art. The cakes are decorated with fresh flowers, stems and leaves, creating the effect of a still life painting. These works, like paintings, immerse into the world of beauty, where each decoration delicately fits into the overall composition. Frans de Ferrier pays special attention not only to aesthetics but also to taste: each cake is carefully flavored and lovingly baked in her own kitchen on the Lower East Side.

Why try From Lucie’s cakes?

  • The “shebby-chic” aesthetic – cakes that not only surprise with flavor, but also serve as true works of art;
  • Natural decorations – fresh flowers and leaves, harmoniously integrated into the cake design, give a special sophistication to each product;
  • Carefully selected ingredients – each cake from Lucie is a perfect combination of flavors that surprise and delight.

Lucie France de Ferrier has created a unique style in the world of pastry art, combining flavor tradition and visual beauty. If you want to try something unusual, to taste a piece of artwork that you can eat, From Lucie is a place that is definitely worth a visit.

The address is 263 East 10th Street, New York, NY 10009.

Arcade Bakery has opened in the heart of Tribeca, in the elegant marble lobby of the Merchant’s Square Building office building. Cozy niches with folding tables, a vintage art nouveau buffet and unrivaled baked goods from a world champion baker make this place truly special.

Unique space

Arcade Bakery is housed in a building dating back to 1900. High vaulted ceilings and noble materials give the place an atmosphere of restrained luxury. Architects from Brooklyn-based studio Workstead helped to realize the concept. Instead of a standard hall with tables, they used eight large showcases built into a long corridor.

One of the cabinets turned into an open kitchen, another into a counter, and the rest became cozy areas for guests. Glass was removed, the walls of niches were covered with mahogany, and folding tables were installed at different heights, creating a variety of options for comfortable rest. Here you can sit on the edge, climb inside with your feet or simply have a snack standing up. When leaving, the guest lifts the table behind them, freeing up space.

Atmosphere and style

Natural materials – wood, copper, glass – are used for decoration. The lighting is complemented by stylized chandeliers and sconces created especially for Arcade Bakery by Workstead designers. The only truly antique interior detail is an exquisitely carved Art Nouveau sideboard.

The Art of Baking

Arcade Bakery’s owner, famed baker Roger Gural, treats baking as a true art form. Breads, rolls, pizzas, and other freshly baked goods are not just served, but displayed in handcrafted glass cases and on the shelves of an antique buffet, emphasizing their status as unique culinary creations.

Arcade Bakery is not just a place to drink coffee and enjoy pastries, but a corner with a unique atmosphere, harmoniously combining aesthetics, tradition and impeccable taste.
